noe fic holy shit

A setting set in some vague fictional European-based area. there is a monarchy and several orders of knights. amias is a captain in the knights and juno is a farmer from a small village. the beginning of the story is slice of life and then it sharply turns into war.

amias

25 - ♀ - holy knightduty bound
devoutly religious
kind
a flirt
selfless to the point its annoying (won't prioritize what she wants)
captain of the unit that visits juno's village on patrols every few weeks. her and juno grew close on these visits for a few years until their country went to war and ami was called away.

amias personality

backstory
- grew up in a medium sized town, her father taught her the sword when she was young
- there was a knight she was close with that patrolled her town occasionally, promised she could try out when she was 16
- became le epic knight wahoo !! at the current point in time, she commands a small force of knights but she's not too high in the chain of command
- her father died a while back due to natural causes but she's in touch with her mother
relating to being a knight
- incredibly serious about her work, serious about her religion
- serious about her comrades... very (shonen protag voice) i will never leave my friends behind
- a little selfless...? she would generally choose her duty/religion/country over her personal happiness
- during the war, she does think about shirking her duty at times.. and is slightly disappointed in herself for doing so. but ultimately she is in too deep and there is no real alternative... and she does believe in the cause
- fighting style is generally well balanced, she's not a tank but she's also not super light on her feet
- does not particularly enjoy being a leader but is solid at it
general personality
- kind, likes to help around the village and befriend people
- kind of flirty/lighthearted to women, likes to make people laugh
- has a bit of a reputation as a playboy (playgirl??? LMAO)
- goes with the flow, is not particularly uptight or irritable, easy to get along with
- a little gullible/ oblivious in small ways? but not stupid at all, plays along with tricks even if she isn't fooled just to make the other person happy
- likes being around kids
- physically affectionate !!! likes to touch people... the first time she hugged juno goodbye amias thought about how her nose smushed into her collarbone for a week...
- maybe a little savior complex. can be a little overbearing about trying to fix your problems if you tell her about them
- capable of being really serious/firm, it stands out since it's so different from her usual demeanor, but she has a lot of lines she won't cross no matter what
- she's a bit helpless at making up with people/conflict resolution since she is on good terms with pretty much everyone
about juno (pre-war)
- juno was kind of mean/stand off-ish to amias at first, and amias was interested b/c she had never seen her before and wanted to befriend her
- kind of just kept following her around... thought she was amusing... liked to wind her up a bit ^q^
- also had an image of juno as particularly lonely... since she lives at the outskirts of town and didn't seem to have many friends. so she also wanted to be a genuine friend to her
- sometimes amias tries to awkwardly ask juno if shes lonely/wants someone to talk to.??? LOL and juno is just like are you crazy. im fine. fucking extroverts
- fall into a genuine companionship, amias appreciates how quiet n gentle juno's home is, especially as things get more politically tense
about juno (post-war)
- wants juno to be safe and knows this position is far away from where amias is
- both is willing to and does put junos safety over both of their feelings
- does she feel good about this..? not really
- not that big of a crybaby but does get teary whenever juno begs her to stay
- secretly, the time she spent with juno and recovering in juno's home were her only good memories of the war
- willingly chooses her duty over juno every time, but she's not happy about it

juno personality

backstory
- she's always lived in this town.
- her parents died when she was in her late teen and she's been self sufficient for a while. she has aunts and uncles who helped her get on her feet and visit sometimes.
- she's a farmer, she grows enough for herself and sells the excess to suppliers directly. she doesn't like working the market to sell to other villagers.
general personality
- she's pretty taciturn, she likes to do things simply and isn't very talkative. she's not unkind though, or easy to anger.
- she's happy on her own most of the time, she gets along mostly with older people. she's bad with kids.
- living such an isolated life, she generally is disconnected from greater things like politics. her interests are generally about her immediate self and area.
- likes the countryside, sometimes draws and paints plein air but isn't good at it. she also can sew, cook, do home repairs, to various extents.
- not religious. doesn't care if other people are, but doesn't understand it
- she seems a little unapproachable, her air is a little refined and her face is often flat.
- she likes jokes though. her laugh is quiet
- not affectionate until she's very comfortable
- has strong conviction, she does what she needs to do
about amias (pre-war)
- she was annoyed but vaguely entertained by this knight who kept trying to make small talk with her. amias told jokes sometimes which juno liked. juno still was rather short to her and tried to end conversations quickly. no one else had talked to juno so casually and with the intent to provoke so many emotions, so their encounters were a weird part of her week.
- she thought amias was nosey and had too much time on her hands. overall, she didn't think the knights did much so this plummeted her opinion even more
- amias follows juno home one day and juno starts putting her to work, she's annoying but it's free labor. juno just makes her do all the work she doesn't want to do
- she grows used to amias' presence and comes to appreciate her warmth. also she likes not having to do the laundry all the time
about amias (post-war)
- im not gonna lie i don't think juno has a very positive view on her for a very long time. its kind of the feeling of unfortunately my first true friend in a very long time is very strange and unknowable but i still want to help her and im mad i cant let her go.
- in the beginning, i think juno is sympathetic. she thinks that amias is in a hard position and wasn't able to contact her beforehand. she's very genuinely worried about amias' wellbeing.
- being brought into the military and the lack of communication continuing makes juno reconsider their relationship, she feels abandoned and feels that anything they had has been burned up by circumstance.
- she resolves to give up on amias around here, which is why she's so distant.
- help this is just becoming a plot summary, i think her feelings are shown pretty well in the summary since she's the pov char/... oops

the story

set in an ambiguously european and middle aged setting. magic does not exist but god is a bit more of a concrete presence? there are miracles, prophecies, a high priest that can communicate briefly w god, and whatnot.amias and juno's country
anatole - relatively peaceful for the past couple decades, rather large but isolated, landlocked on two sides and borders the ocean on the last two side. most of the population lives near the west side near the ocean. juno lives near a bordering country, in one of the landlocked sections ( on the yellow star on the map). both temperature and farming conditions are similar to like, ohio..? (20-40F in the winter, 60-80F in the summer)
ineva - to the west, alliedfremiko- to the westcoricidia - to the northwestaberinha - to the northeast, starts the war for coastal resources and control of anatole's eastern coastbremiste - to the south, alliedred line - amias' unit patrol route
blue line - second patrol line of another unit
juno lives on the outskirts of her town, actually a few miles from the border of the town. its a border village focused on agriculture. there are two knight patrols that come by semi often because of the border status.amias lives in the knights quarters in a separate town. they pretty much alternate a week in the quarters and then a week out on patrol.amias and juno
- amias visits juno's town on a regular basis since its on the patrol route, she coincidentally met juno at the market one day while amias was on errands for the town baker
- amias struck up a convo because she's just like that... juno kind of shuts her down and ignores her which triggers the golden retriever instinct a little...
- from then every time she comes by, she spots juno in the crowd and tries to talk to her
- juno comes to appreciate/expect it(?) (romance cliche alarms blare) (sorry) and stops driving amias away, amias follows her home and eats dinner with her a lot
- they have a little bit of a quiet companionship at home... amias likes to mess around and tease her sometimes but usually theyre just working around the house/farm together. amias comes and goes since shes regularly on the move
- amias' patrol stays overnight at this town on their rounds, amias starts sleeping over at juno's house in the outskirts of town sometimes. she wants to get closer with juno but is kind of clumsy about it <:3c so she just kind of goes into the fields to work until it gets dark and comes back in and is like well. it sure is dark. kind of cold too? wow!! lost track of time... do you have a lantern i can borrow to walk alllll the way back to town... aha.... and juno stares at her. and amias is like sweating. and juno is like are you trying to ask to sleep here. amias: yeah....- and they just have this sweet routine aghh... its not really explicitly romantic... best friend married... theres about 2.5 years where they're getting really close to each other before political tensions start to rise
- both the townspeople and amias' coworkers like to tease abt it but really they're just extremely domestic friends. platonic hand holding, platonic sleeping in the same bed, platonic making dinner tgther, platonic running in the rain, platonic h(explosions) everyone kind of knows theyre a unit
- juno is kind of friendly w the other knights but in a distant waythe war ^-^ yayayaya ^-^
- things get kind of tense between aberinha and anatole (why are they both a's sorry lol)
- anatole and aberinha have been going back and forth over control of the eastern coast for a few decades now, generally moreso economic warfare and small scale scuffles though. officially its been anatole's territory for fourty years now. the border lines were redrawn at the end of the last largescale war. relations have been a little tense since then, it's not easy to cross the border so there are some aberinhans who still live in coastal cities of anatole.
- deposits of various metals were found along the cliffs of the eastern coast. while aberinha had been doing alright as an agricultural nation, there had still naturally evolved a large lower agricultural and fishing class and a small ruling class. the ruling class was dissatisfied with the cost of importing various metals.- both the historical claims and resources finally culminated in enough motivation for war.
- in order to gain popular support for the war, aberinha wanted an opportunity to reframe it as something other than a war of resources. there was mild support existing for the reclamation of the coast already among those old enough to remember when borders were redrawn.
- propaganda against anatole begins to rise in aberinha, the rulers are not perfect or even particularly good, so it's easy to frame and exaggerate. there's a heavy emphasis on religion in anatole. whereas while aberinha has a significant portion of its population under the same religion, religion is not part of the government. this is another point brought up in the smear.- ultimately what i want here is that neither nation is particularly good. religion should not be part of government obviously. and i feel like when territory has been passed around between two neighboring nations ever since civilization roughly existed, its hard to say objectively who should have the land/resources. both do underhanded things in the process of the war. there is a feeling of the ruling class not caring that the middle and lower class will carry the burden of the war, as always. is it a pointless war? probably. there was no dire need for metal in aberinha, just that the rich wanted to increase their profit margins. this fact is obfuscated pretty easily without the existence of widespread communication.- i want amias to be heartfelt in her love for her country's religion and people. i don't think she's blind to the flaws, but she's not particularly a leader. she has no grand ambitions of improving the country, just that she serves her position well. she miiight kind of like the non-separation of church and state ngl.
her stance on the war is, pretty much like.. she isn't passionate about who the land belongs to, just knows that anatole will be losing large swaths of land and it's nebulous where aberinha will stop and how they'll treat the newly annexed people. her village/general area of residence is in an area likely to be annexed, so there is just a fear of the unknown. she likes how her life is currently. she is heavily compelled to participate because of her religious faith and love for her unit. she really isn't a pacifist person, so that helps as well.
- juno is pretty apathetic/disillusioned. she has family from aberinha, but generally just doesn't care about most of it. in an objective sense, she doesn't like fighting, so she wishes for a swift diplomatic conclusion. the fighting is not near her village so the political/military parts of it are not really important to her, she just wants to see amias home safe.- in terms of amias leaving.. tensions were rising for a while, but junoe never really broached the topic. amias shut it down if others tried to ask about how things were going.
news spreads pretty fast once war is declared since units are being reallocated. i don't think amias has time to say goodbye in person, the both of them kind of pine separately. amias has been to juno's house so often, the remnants of her are everywhere. the day after amias' patrol should have come through, and does not, juno gathers everything and locks it in the attic. runs her hands down her face and desperately hopes someday she'll be able to unlock it and give everything back.
- juno is past the point of denial, she knows she liked when amias was around and the sudden loneliness is hard to bear with. she was fine before, and naturally, she continues to function. it hurts that people in town sometimes seek her out for information about amias' unit, she knows just as little as they do. her thorny reputation rebuilds itself as she sends them all off with a glare.
- where juno closes off and becomes brittle, amias opens and solidifies. she wants to be a strong figure for her unit in public, she never shows any doubt or weakness in public. she wouldn't want to confide in juno either. she tries to get a letter back to the village, but resources are being diverted elsewhere. she regrets never discussing this possibility with juno, there had been abundant signs of the oncoming war.- so anyways. it continues. all patrol units are drafted into the military sections and they start fighting and stuff. both nations are pretty evenly matched. anatole underestimates the whole situation more or less, and does not pour as much money into their military. they are pushed back to approximately where juno's village is.- evacuation is ordered, but its last minute and juno's house is too far out. juno doesn't know what's happened until the fighting is within a mile of her house and the sun is setting. there's fires burning through the prairie and the smoke outside is thick. for a blessed moment, she thinks about running into the fight and finding amias. but she doesn't even know if her unit is within the forces fighting here, doesn't even know if amias has survived until now. thinks about them dying on the same battlefield, their blood mixing into the soil and flowers growing years later.but she shakes the thoughts out of her head. knowing its a silly thing to waste time on in the wake of what is incoming, juno unlocks the attic and hangs up the clothing amias left on the line outside. she leaves a candle burning in the window. eyes red, she locks the attic again and goes into the basement. she holes up in her basement and barricades the doors and windows. pulls a blanket around herself and doesn't sleep, just listens to the sounds of fighting around her.- she wakes up in the morning from a fitful sleep to banging on the door, and silence otherwise. she pulls the furniture out of the way. islot is standing there, and tells her that this area is under an evacuation order. juno ignores this and asks her evenly how captain amias is doing. her heart throbs faintly, but after the night she's had, she's too tired to feel anything else. it registers faintly that if amias is alive, she didn't come personally to check on her.islot frowns, having expected this question. all she replies with is that captain amias is fine. there's no other details given. juno's teeth clench. she asks islot where people are evacuating to, islot replies that there's no designated area, people are seeking out friends/family or just taking their money and valuables elsewhere.
juno doesn't have anyone to return to. she tells islot. islot shifts awkwardly, finally gives up the act and sighs. tells her theyve taken in some refugees who have nowhere to go into the unit, put them to work in service roles like cooking, cleaning, medical care. she has to go clear it with the higher ups, but she'll come back in a day and let her know. islot cracks a tiny tired smile and tells her amias might like to see her again. juno's face remains flat, tells her thanks and closes the door again.
she's numb all over. feels like she overestimated what she and amias had. that distance had torn apart whatever they had. and in the back of her mind, knows its irrational to be thinking so intently of a single person with carnage knocking on her backdoor.extinguishes the candle in the window. pulls down all the clothing from the line and locks it away again. lies on the ground and stares blankly at the sky. smoke still obfuscates much of the sun.she wakes up to amias shaking her awake. blinks a few times, its islot. shes crouching over juno and smiling faintly. the sun has barely rose and its a little chilly. juno belatedly realized she's slept out here the entire night. islot tells her to get packed, she can come stay with the forces. juno packs a meager bag of belongings and food and rides back with islot, staring at her house as it fades into the distance and the rising sun blots it out.juno arrives at camp, receives the assignment that they've put her with the medical team. they don't have time to train her so she just gets to observe the doctors. in her downtime, she looks around the tent and wonders if amias didn't come see her because she was injured. amias' face isn't distinct in her mind, she worries she wouldn't be able to recognize her anyways.juno settles into the camp. she is standoffish to the other doctors. the food is bad. they don't have enough horses, so she shuffles along in the daytime. she's never walked so much in her life.the civilian workers are supposed to be safe, but an ambush breaks through. aberinhan soldiers are torching the camp, the supplies, people are dead and injured on the ground. juno freezes, there's no chain of command, she doesn't know if she's supposed to treat people or run. doesn't know where to run to. starts stumbling through the camp.sees a blond figure fell another knight. slices their sword to the side to remove the blood. turns around, sees juno. juno freezes, realizes she does still recognize amias. the bloodied figure on the ground grabs junos ankle and yanks her, but amias pulls juno in with one arm by the neck, with her palm covering juno's eyes. the other hand brings down her sword again and slashes the mans neck. blood splatters juno's ankles.amias quickly steers her away from the body to a clearing. juno grabs at amias' hand, she doesn't know what to say, but she wants to see amias' face again. her hand falls off, juno stares at her features, brings a hand up to grab at her cheek. amias bats it away and juno starts crying for the first time since the war began, amias eyes droop and she looks quietly at juno's face. through tears, juno asks if amias is alright. amias manages a wane smile and asks how juno is holding up, ignoring the previous question. juno says shes fine. she woke up to the camp in flames and doesn't know where to go. amias' expression hardens, she holds juno's shoulder in one hand and points towards the south with another. tells her to run and meet up in the nearby town in two days time if things look clear. juno doesn't reply, her hand holds an edge of amias' uniform and her eyes shine wetly. her mouth is set in a firm line.amias pulls the hand off not gently, but not with force. turns juno in the direction she's supposed to run and pushes her a little, juno stumbles but, on autopilot, starts to run. her heart beats unsteadily and her mind doesn't know whether to focus on possible impending death or that's she's finally seen her old friend again. she keeps running.while juno runs to town, amias spends a blessed few moments thinking of following her. she hadn't gone to see juno the entire time they were at camp together because she knew it would shake her resolve. she misses juno, feels like juno wouldn't like the current version of herself. but knows that she cannot stop what she is doing until the war is concluded. she goes back into the battle.juno finds the town, and stays with the other civilians who were with the forces. the town is deserted otherwise. the wells still work, but they lack food. the mood is grim like it never was before, this group of people have little elsewhere to go to if the troops don't come back.the troops do come back for them, a battered man ushers them back to camp. juno has bandages and antiseptic stuffed in her hands as she arrives, the medic tent is packed. she stays up the entire night with the wounded and doesn't sleep until the sun is high.amias has finally resolved to straight things out, ducks into the tent to find her sleeping. she takes a seat by the bedside. her face is tired, her fingers lightly brush some hair away from juno's face. juno unconsciously turns away a little, and amias sighs. she sits there for a few hours until juno wakes up.they talk. amias basically tells her about how she wishes she could've told her in advance but she was drafted too quickly. there were no messengers. tells her about how busy the campaign has been. there's no mention of her doubts. juno is quiet. amias tells her she's glad that juno is alright. junos face is neutral and her tone is mild, says shes glad amias explained and she's happy to see her too.

there's a distance between them that didn't exist before. amias feels it too, knows that this is the price of her putting her duty above everything else. she turns her face into the shadows so juno can't see her expression. holds juno's hand one last time and takes her leave. juno feels her heart race in the silence of the room, distantly hating what she feels for someone who won't choose her.the troops and accompaniment move back to near juno's town. they are holding this part of the border. things are quiet for a few weeks, there's some occasional scuffles but the civilians don't have to march for a while. every few days, amias brings lunch and tea to juno's tent. juno remains more withdrawn than before, and amias does her best to bring back the old atmosphere. somedays juno isn't in her tent. amias sits there in silence and leaves the untouched lunch behind when she has to leave. the tea goes cold but juno drinks it later that day anyways. it's a strange dance of, they both like eachother. they both know its mutual to some extent. juno continues to keep her distance due to knowing in current circumstances, it will not work out. it's very dubious that it will ever work out. juno tries to wean herself off and amias tries to make up for lost time.juno starts having nightmares about the bodies she sees everyday. roughly basing the medicine and conditions here around the world war 1 time period, where amputations were still common. there was limited usage/knowledge of anesthetic and the importance of disinfecting/cleaning was discovered. cauterization was a common practice. medical knowledge needed was not intense, you just kind of hack and cauterize and bandage and pray.there's some more battles. yeah. nothing really important here just wanna show time passing. juno is getting better with medicine. its been around 8 months since the war began.there's a larger battle, its driven back to where the camp is. it's not am ambush, so the medics are prepared and don't flee this time. theyre dragging the wounded back to the tent and prioritizing those that look they can still be saved.(ok lowkey this is where i was getting tired and writing stuff after work so im sorry if im not as epic and narrative but i do really like this part of the story. and definitely didnt have it as one of the first things i ever fleshed out.lol)juno, as one of the less experienced medics, is helping bring people back from the battlefield. she's on autopilot, until she turns over a body and sees a familiar head of hair. wipes away the blood and sees amias' face. drags her behind a tent to inspect the injury, its not looking good. it doesnt look like something the tent would prioritize, even given amias' status. she has no greater duty to the priorities of the medics. juno drapes the tent fabric over amias and steal into the medic tent, coming back with bandages and tools shoved down her dress front.her eyes at half mast, her hands work on autopilot. there is no real time to think about whatever complex feelings. its at least definite that their relationship means enough for juno not to want to see amias dead. she finished a makeshift treatment, and covers amias back up. she stirs a little.its easy to grab an abandoned horse in the chaos, juno pulls it back to the tent sight. she drags amias up and ties her to the neck of the horse, boards behind her and wraps her hands around her waist. hears someone calling for her in the distance as she urges the horse away. she brings them home.she drapes amias' hand around her shoulders and pulls her inside. as they cross the threshold juno stands still. she imagined amias returning to this house many times, but never this scenario. the house is quiet and dusty. junos face is grim.she puts amias' on her bed. checks the wound again, its even worse than her hurried check made her believe. the bone doesn't look repairable, it's practically splintered in her left arm. theres shrapnel up and down the limb. this is usually something that requires amputation, otherwise it will get infected too easily and even without that, has almost no chance of ever being usable again.it's not standard practice to ask for consent before amputation, but juno feels the need to ask, some confirmation that she's made the right choices here. amias is unconscious and just bleeds silently on the bed. the bed they used to share. juno takes out the saw, splint, and restraints they use for amputation.she performs it. cauterizes the stump in a bid to reduce infection. the greater portion of a mangled arm lies on her floorboards as she treats other misc injuries and tries to staunch blood flow. she alternates between bandages and fire.stands over amias' body in the end, there's blood everywhere. even her room resembles a battle field now. before she cleans her hands, she takes a wet cloth and wipes amias' face and chest. she lays down in the blood soaked bed alongside amias, but does not touch her. she cannot sleep, and so she just stares blankly. amias' bandages are soaked through, juno does not have the supplies or energy to change them. as she lies there, her face only lightly contorts as tears run down her nose bridge and absorb into the mess of blood on the sheets.she places a shaking hand in amias' intact hand. she had avoided ami and distanced herself in fear of this exact situation, that amias would die for her country before she would live for her. that all their mutual love and companionship would never amount to enough in the face of grand concepts like god and duty. and yet she still missed amias, she still wanted to be with her, didn't realize the solitude of her existence until it was confronted with an alternative. even if amias wakes up and lives, she will not stay.juno closes her eyes, and she prays.her thoughts are not coherent, they twist and turn to every god she can think of until she falls into a fitful sleep. she wakes a few hours later, crawls around amias to check on her. her pulse is weak but the bleeding has stopped. the bindings stay as they originally were, the town is deserted and there's little hope of procuring more supplies. there is no more bandages or alcohol, juno doesn't disturb a hair on her body, hoping that stillness will stave away infection or something equally delusional.and so she sits and sleeps for a week in that blood encrusted bedding. feeds amias sugar water and milk. she barely eats herself, the days pass in a haze. the cottage is dim and the distant fear of the punishment deserters face hangs over juno and mixes in with the constant fear of death and infection. she doesn't know how to tell if amias' is improving, she counts her pulse but has nothing to time it with.on the 10th day, amias wakes up. she's hungry and in pain, juno explains briefly what happened and amias doesn't reply much. juno cooks something and feeds her. her heart is beating wildly, if amias is awake the worst is over. (she thinks lol i dont think shes actually very knowledgeable of medicine) at least she's able to ask her how to proceed and get some indications of health.juno changes the sheets and takes off amias' bandages to help her clean up. her uniform could be salvaged, but juno lies and says it's not. she burns it outside. she goes to the attic and thinks about how desperate she was when she locked everything up, and how now she is calm unlocking it. she doesn't understand how she feels anymore. she brings amias' belongings from before the war down to her. amias is surprised she kept them, but does not say that outloud. her hands just tighten in the fabric of her old clothing. she changes into it.she focuses on healing, juno doesn't ask about anything relating to her job or the country or the war, and amias doesn't bring it up. she needs help walking around the house and struggles to eat with her left hand for a while. she's in a lot of pain and sleeps a lot. there's no other bed, so juno joins her most of the time. it feels like old times, which aren't actually all that old. lots of juno's farm didn't survive going unattended for so long, but she forages and plants more. they eat small meals. gradually, their old comradery is returning, the peace and isolation eroding grander thoughts.in a month, amias can walk on her own. she's assisting slowly with farming again. one day juno sees her swinging the wooden stake the tomatoes grew on, and her heart clenches. it breaks the spell of the past that has been cast on her, and when amias comes inside juno has a solemn expression. she asks if amias would stay here until the conclusion of the war if she asked. amias is quiet, her back is turned and juno can't see her expression.juno asks her not to go, they finally have an emotionally fufilling convo where they actually say whats on their minds i guess lol. they go over how juno felt in the beginning as well as what happened on the night juno deserted. juno grips amias' by the chest and tells her with red eyes that she prayed for her the first night she was home. and yet everything that aided amias' recovery was from juno's hands. and all amias' god does is push her back into the fray. if she didn't think it was useless before, she does now.amias feels like she still cannot admit weakness, doesnt tell juno why she didnt want to see her back then but she does tell juno she cares for her and will come back to her. shes crying a little.juno doesnt believe her. tells her she cant even fight in her current state. tells her if she can then maybe she should go inside and get the saw to cut off her other arm.amias doesnt want to fight. she tells juno what they do to deserters. tells juno she wouldnt be counted as one but amias would bejuno asks when shes leaving, amias says she doesnt know. juno insists on watching her train to judge her condition.amias tells her over breakfast one day that she thinks she can leave tomorrow. juno grimly accepts. juno entertains the idea of going back with her to ensure her safety and whatnot but her staying is symbolic to her. she wants to show amias that she cannot have both her war and juno. she wont serve her duty. the area around her house is no longer in much danger of becoming a battlefield, but the town is deserted.amias leaves. juno kisses her chastely at the door. tells her she wont forgive her if they next meet in hell. amias says shes going to heaven. juno kisses her again and tells her she wont after what shes put juno through. amias apologizes. juno tells her to go. she does.yay happy ending
amias comes back to juno's town post-war, tells juno how she really felt during all that and that she's quitting the service so she can do what really made her happy as a knight - just helping people around the town.
they reconcile, get married in a few years, and continue to run the farm. juno continues to learn medicine on the side to help amias adjust without an arm. amias likes to build things and they collab on some basic prosthetics.overall its just a pretty idyllic ending i think, the things to wrap up here are mostly like the effects of war and the power of individual choice. i think this way shows how both of them were changed and scarred and used by the war effort and that they both had to take decisions into their own hands to break into a lifestyle that they enjoy.boohoo ending
i also feel like.. while pessimistic... it brings the messages full circle to have amias die later on in the war and juno has to move on with her life with that absence.
it greater shows the consequences of personal choice and war, amias chose to remain loyal to the state and her religion when faced with that crossroads and this is obviously the side that does not value her. juno chose to be loyal to herself and she lives, but still feels the pain and aftereffects through the people around her.juno does not date again, her attic remains locked and she resumes her life pretty much as it was before the events of the story. she is alone again.i don't want her to feel bad for not convincing amias to stay, it was amias' own personal choice and conviction that lead her to this outcome. juno laments that the war even created this situation and hopes there is no more as long as she lives.amias' mother comes to visit juno, they share in grief. amias' mother comes to live nearby and the both of them move forward.themes or something
our greater role -- amias embraces being part of a greater system at the expense of some of her personal beliefs and freedoms, juno is loyal only to herself and her interests
the role of war -- who is it for, who does it hurt, is it a meaningful venture, for who is it meaningfulduty v love -- what is the personal threshold of things love falls second to, what is the ramifications of doing thisreligion -- this is nebulous but the set up of amias being religious and juno being agnostic and the warring countries also reflecting this is probably something. ill figure it out. yeah. not a particularly charitable portrayal of religion since the issue of what happens when church is involved with state comes up, but also i want to show that personal belief can be beautiful and worthwhile. so i guess we have big state religion v personal religion v no religion as a thingsacrifices and making decisions for others -- amias chose to cut herself out of juno's life at the beginning of the war, juno chose to cut off amias' arm, two major well-meaning decisions made without consent with a major impact on the other person. what do i wanna say here..??? im not super sure. i just think its poetic and sexy i guess. communication is hot and you'll pull more bitches if you talk to them about major decisions instead of assuming what's good for them. also you wont lose an arm
